To start, all you'll need are some treats and a floor surface with good traction! Items such as DIY paw blocks, platforms, and nubby mats can be added on for minimal cost. Fancier equipment such as wobble boards, balance discs, etc. may be useful but aren't necessary. Fitness is an everyday thing and we can do it (mostly) with everyday objects!
If you're interested in competition scent sports (Nosework for dogs), you'll need about $50 worth of supplies to get started. If you're interested in stress relief, supplies are significantly cheaper. With either, you'll need to be able to restrain your dog out of sight from the search area, and as the dog progresses you'll need access to different indoor and outdoor spaces.
As a licensed veterinary technician (nurse), I am not a prescriber and cannot make a diagnosis. However, I am a certified companion animal rehabilitation therapist and can work with a prescription from your veterinarian, or we can work together on general conditioning and strengthening goals.
For the most part; in-person availability is limited. Virtual dog training and working remotely on feline fitness, canine fitness and Nosework can also benefit animals who may not enjoy in-person clinic work.
For Nosework, yes! I teach September through June via PumpkinPups. If you are looking for a fun pastime for your dog, group classes can be a great and affordable start.
